Sharepoint Services is a free add-on to Windows 2003 Server that allows teams to share information in a controlled manner.

The latest version of Windows SharePoint Services now includes new blogs and wikis for community collaboration, enhanced document management features to help ensure data integrity, and improved integration with client applications such as the Microsoft Office system.

In particular, Sharepoint Services can:

Increase team productivity by facilitating the sharing of ideas, information, documents and schedules.
Improve communication by alerting users when information is updated and allowing teams to participate in surveys, discussions and document review
Improve management of team activities with facilities for document change management, version control, team scheduling and group announcements

Teams can have their own "portals" containing all the information relevant to them. The content of these portals, along with access to that content, is managed by a simple web interface. This, coupled with Microsoft Office 2003 integration, ensures that maintenance of team portals is simple and efficient.

Deployments of Windows SharePoint Services are growing fast, as this technology is easy to implement at the departmental level. Organizations must control these deployments -- without smothering innovation -- or face WSS chaos.

Windows SharePoint Services enables users to create team sites to collaborate on documents. It works well for Microsoft customers needing basic collaboration, but the product has limitations, and it must be correctly managed.

E-mail is a great communication tool, but it isn't the best for collaboration and coordination, because context' is often lacking. Shared work spaces provide better team support and capture context better, but, so far, users are unwilling to abandon their 'comfortable' e-mail environments.
